The Origin Story Behind Veer

Hello Veer community. Sean Hacking here.

I wanted to give a little background as to why I was inspired to create Split Belt and help propel adoption of bikes and light electric vehicles.

When I see our gridlocked city streets, my mind wanders to a future where people can get around quickly, easily and healthily in their community.

We see this happen in cities all around the world: when they move away from cars and transition to alternative transportation, it creates a happier and healthier lifestyle.

I can tell you this because I’ve experienced it firsthand. When I lived in Amsterdam, my bicycle was the only form of transportation I had to get around.

That being said, with the shift away from cars, there are problems. I experienced one of those problems.

A few years ago while in Taiwan, I was on a rental bike touring temples when I pulled out into an intersection and my chain snapped, plummeting me to the ground. I then crawled out of the intersection, bruised and bloody, to avoid getting hit by the vehicles speeding by.

This was not the first time I had a mechanical failure that caused an accident, but I wanted to make sure it was the last.

As alternative transportation changes to electric and replaces cars in urban centers, there are problems with the reliability and safety of these vehicles.

Veer has set out on a mission to create a new system of drive components that are more reliable, cost effective, and safer for everyone to use as we transition into the future of sustainability.
